One of the most important collections of Medieval painting from the XIIth to the XVth c. is housed in San Matteo National Museum: paintings by Giunta Pisano, Simone Martini, Masaccio, Ghirlandaio, Beato Angelico can be here admired together with a unique exhibition of Medieval crosses painted on wood.

It also contains Medieval wood and marble sculptures and several ceramic bowls, mostly Islamic, and originally used as decoration for the Pisan churches.

The places that once housed these treasures can still be visited with a pleasant stroll through the city centre: Piazza Garibaldi, the church of San Michele in Borgo, the Dominican church of Santa Caterina, the small church of Santa Maria della Spina.
